PROVIDENCE, RI—City Council President Luis Aponte issued an advisory to inform the public that Providence Municipal Court will be closed on Wednesday, March 8th. Aponte was informed today that the March 8th “Day Without a Woman” demonstration will leave the court without enough staff to open its doors. The seventy five court cases scheduled for tomorrow will be rescheduled, and notices with a new court date will likely be mailed early next week.

“We are trying to get the word out to everyone who was issued a summons to appear in court or planned to pay fines tomorrow,” said Aponte, who hopes the message reaches all affected parties today to mitigate inconveniences. “Many people have to take time out of work or find childcare well in advance of a court date. We’re working under a tight timeframe to minimize the impact of this decision.” Payments received by the court tomorrow will be processed on Thursday. Aponte has asked the court to ensure that licenses are not suspended and late fees are not accrued due to the closure. The Court Administrator and Court Officer confirmed they will be present tomorrow to assist on all matters.
