Rethinking public schools focus of conference November 18-19


The Transformative Researchers and Educators for Democracy (TRED) will hold its 5 th
annual UMass Dartmouth Graduate Students Conference , Friday, November 18, 6-8 p.m.,
through Saturday, November 19, 2016, 8:30 a.m.-5.p.m, at the New Bedford Whaling

The theme of the 2015 conference, «Rethinking Public Schools: Education,
Immigration, and Economic Development,» aims to provide a public space for
educational researchers and practitioners to engage in critical and transformative
dialogues to rethink the role of public education in the light of immigration and
economic development.

TRED seeks to provide a public space for critical dialogue about the opportunities
within public education for critical transformative change. Through forums,
presentation sessions, panel discussions, and informal gatherings, TRED creates
opportunities to showcase research on educational leadership and policy.

Dr. Jonathan Kozol, author of Savage Inequalities, will offer remarks on Friday,
Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. Dr. Theresa Perry, a Professor in the departments of Africana
Studies and Education at Simmons College and Director of the Simmons College/Beacon
Press, Education and Democracy Lecture and Book Series will speak on Saturday,
November 19 at 9:30 a.m.

The conference is organized by UMass Dartmouth’s College of Arts & Sciences and its
Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. Graduate students,
educators, civic leaders, professionals, researchers, and members of the greater
educational community have been invited to attend and participate in the conference.

The Department of Educational Leadership (DEL) assumes a leading role locally,
nationally and internationally in preparing a new generation of transformative
educational leaders and policy analysts committed to the pursuit of scholarship and
serving those most in need. The department is recognized for its commitment to
research, engagement in the community, and advocating for educational reform.
