Reed and Whitehouse Statement on Nomination of Aaron L. Weisman to be U.S. Attorney for Rhode Island

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, after the White House announced President Trump’s intent to nominate Rhode Island’s Assistant Attorney General Aaron L. Weisman to be the next U.S. Attorney for Rhode Island, United States Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse issued the following statement:

“We are pleased Mr. Weisman has been nominated to be the lead federal prosecutor for Rhode Island.  He’s dedicated, well-respected, and has a record of exemplary service in the Rhode Island Attorney General’s office.  We are confident he will do an effective job serving and protecting the people of Rhode Island,” said Reed and Whitehouse.

Mr. Weisman was nominated by President Trump to replace acting U.S. Attorney Stephen Dambruch, who has led the U.S. Attorney’s office in Rhode Island on a temporary basis since January 5, 2018.

Mr. Weisman currently serves as an Assistant Attorney General and the Chief of the Rhode Island Attorney General’s criminal appeals unit.  Mr. Weisman has held that position since January 1993.  He previously served as a special assistant attorney general in the criminal appeals unit.  A graduate of Brandeis University, Mr. Weisman received his J.D. from Cardozo School of Law.

There are 93 U.S. Attorneys nationwide (one in Rhode Island) who are charged with enforcing federal criminal laws.

Now that Mr. Weisman has been nominated by the President, he must be approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee and then confirmed by the full Senate.  Nominees must be approved by the U.S. Senate to serve a four-year term of service.
