Winning Artwork Will Be on Display in the U.S. Capitol

WARWICK, R.I. — Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) will announce the winners of the 2017 Congressional Art Competition at an awards ceremony Sunday at the Warwick Mall. The “Artistic Discovery Contest” is open to all high school students in the Second Congressional District, and this year’s competition attracted 60 entries.

Students were invited to submit pieces in one of seven categories: paintings, drawings, collage, prints, mixed media, computer-generated art and photography. All of the artwork will be on display at the Warwick Mall from Friday evening through Sunday’s ceremony.

A panel of judges evaluated this year’s artwork. The judges selected the top three student finishers, all of whom will be recognized Sunday. The top three winners, as well as the four students recognized as honorable mentions, will receive gift bags courtesy of Jerry’s Artarama.

The first place winner will have his or her artwork hung in the U.S. Capitol for one year, and will receive a complimentary flight to Washington to see it on display.
