Rhode Island – On September 15, 2014 at approximately 12:50 p.m., Adult Correctional Institute (ACI) Minimum Security Inmate, Keurys Pena, age 25, aka Michael Santana, of Providence, walked away from his work assignment at the Prison Industries Building on the ACI Grounds in Cranston at 12:50 p.m.

Colonel Steven G. O’Donnell, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Commissioner of Public Safety, announces that on September 17, 2014 at approximately 1:40 p.m., members of the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force (VFTF), Rhode Island State Police Detectives assigned to the Adult Correctional Institute, members of the Providence Police and Special Investigators from the Department of Corrections apprehended Keurys Pena, on Daboll Street near Updike Street in the City of Providence. Members of the VFTF developed information that Pena was in that area, observed Pena walking on the street and took him into custody without incident.

Inmate Pena was serving a ten (10) year sentence with four and one half (4 ½) years to serve for Breaking and Entering into a Dwelling. Pena will be presented on Thursday morning, September 18, 2014, at Third Division District Court, 222 Quaker Lane, Warwick for arraignment on the charge of Escape from Correctional Institutions. Escape from Correctional Institutions carries a possible sentence up to three (3) years or up to a $500.00 fine.

The Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force is comprised of members of the Rhode Island State Police, the United States Marshals Service and the Providence Police Department.
