Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau To Address Governors At Their Summer Meeting
WASHINGTON—The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will address the nation’s governors at their 109th Summer Meeting in Providence, Rhode Island.
“I am thrilled and honored that Prime Minister Trudeau will join us in Rhode Island, where governors will gather to discuss some of the top innovations and best practices happening in our states,” said Summer Meeting Host Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo. “Canada serves as one of the United States’ most important allies and trade partners, so we are eager to hear what the Prime Minister has to say.”
“As chair of the National Governors Association, I am thrilled to welcome Prime Minister Trudeau to our Summer Meeting,” said NGA Chair Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe. “I know my fellow governors will agree that our relationship with Canada is essential to our states on key issues like trade, tourism, energy and many others. I am confident that meeting attendees will benefit from the Prime Minister’s important perspective on relations between our two nations and how we can strengthen the partnership that makes life better for families on both sides of our shared border.”
The theme of the meeting is “States: The Intersection of Collaboration and Innovation,” tied to both Gov. McAuliffe’s initiative on cybersecurity practices in the states and incoming chair Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval’s initiative on disruptive technologies and state policy in the areas of energy and transportation. The meeting also has a strong international component, with a session on states’ role in the changing trade environment, which will be attended by governors’ colleagues from Canada, Mexico, China, Japan and Vietnam. Another internationally focused session will feature a governors’ trade roundtable, with a peer-to-peer exchange between the governors of the United States and Mexico and premiers from Canada.
Trudeau will speak Friday, July, 14. He is Canada’s 23rd Prime Minister, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of Youth. He won the election for Prime Minister on October 19, 2015, winning a majority government with seats in every province and territory across the country. Trudeau was elected on a platform for change and growing the middle class.
