Colonel Ann C. Assumpico, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of the Department of Public Safety, reports that a Woonsocket resident died in a fatal motorcycle crash on Interstate 95 in Pawtucket last night. The victim was identified as Carlos Carrasquillo Baez, age 29, of 65 Arnold St., Woonsocket.

The crash occurred at approximately 9:25 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Pawtucket, south of Lonsdale Avenue (Exit 26). The investigation revealed that Mr. Baez was allegedly travelling at a high rate of speed when his motorcycle collided with the other vehicle. Mr. Baez was ejected from the motorcycle and sustained severe head injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

Mr. Baez was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he later was pronounced dead. The operator of the other vehicle was not injured.

This is the 12th motorcycle fatality in Rhode Island so far this year, according to statistics provided by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation Office on Highway Safety. There were five motorcycle crashes from January 1 through July 31 last year, according to the OHS report.

Colonel Assumpico said she strongly encourages all motorcycle riders and passengers to wear helmets and protective equipment. She also reminds other motorists to be watchful for motorcyclists. The Rhode Island State Police offers the following safety tips and reminders for motorcycle operators:

Always wear a helmet and eye protection. * Wear protective, bright-colored clothing.

Keep high beams on during the day to improve visibility.

Avoid distractions, including cell phones and other electronic devices.

Obey all traffic laws and rules of the road.

NEVER operate a motorcycle or any motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Ride defensively – don’t assume other drivers can see you; be aware of other vehicles nearby; allow extra distance between other vehicles and be prepared to take evasive action if need be.
