The White House reiterated Monday that the arrest of American businessman Alan Gross in Cuba prevents a more constructive relationship between Washington and Havana.

So said the White House spokesman, Jay Carney during the daily briefing at the U.S. capital.

«We continue working to secure their release,» Carney said. «Gross is a husband of 64 years, a father and a dedicated professional with a long history that has offered assistance to underserved communities in more than 50 countries.»

«We reiterate our call on the Cuban government to release Alan Gross.»

Gross was arrested by Cuban authorities in December 2009 and sentenced to 15 years for carrying out «subversive activities.» The U.S. considers Gross innocent of such crimes.
