TO PRECEDE UPCOMING BRIDGE PRESERVATION PROJECT IN PROVIDENCE

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will temporarily close Exit 22 B/C from I-95 North to Route 6 West and Providence Place. On Wednesday night, March 13 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., the exit will close for some preliminary exploratory work before the start of the project in about one month. The work is part of a seven-bridge, $10.4 million preservation project in Providence.

While the exit is closed, motorists on I-95 North will follow a short, two-mile detour using Exit 23 (State Offices/Route 146). In about a month, the exit will close again for approximately ten weeks, Sunday-Thursday nights during the same time period. This will allow RIDOT to repair the bridge joints, do some concrete patching on the underside of the bridge, and replace the bridge railing. The night closures will minimize the effect on traffic.

Exit 22A will remain open during these closures.

The detour routes are available at www.ridot.net/DetourMaps. Turn-by-turn directions are as follows:

  • I-95 North to Exit 23 (State Offices/Route 146)
  • Turn right onto Orms Street
  • Turn right onto Douglas Avenue
  • Turn right onto the on-ramp to I-95 South
  • Take I-95 South to Exit 22B (Route 6 West)

Work on the other six bridges should follow around the start of construction season on April 15. Final completion is scheduled for Spring 2021.

The preservation of these seven bridges in Providence was made possible by RhodeWorks, RIDOT’s ongoing commitment to repair structurally deficient bridges and bring Rhode Island’s transportation infrastructure into a state of good repair, promote economic development, and create jobs. Learn more at www.ridot.net/RhodeWorks.
