Providence – Over the past year we have had a very robust public process to develop the city’s
goals and priorities for the 6/10 project and were able to determine that the our
community cared most about reconnecting neighborhoods, creating opportunities for
economic development, greening the corridor and improving conditions for walking and
biking.

Last December, through a collaborative process, Governor Raimondo and I announced a
design that advances all of the City’s goals while keeping the project on time and
on budget. Since then, through additional public engagement, the City has heard
concerns from Olneyville and Silver Lake residents about pedestrian safety on
Plainfield Street and the proposed removal of the Plainfield Street on-ramp to Route
6.

I’ve asked my team to incorporate these concerns while adhering to the principles of
the original design. Our team, together with RIDOT, has developed a plan that
retains an on-ramp in that location, while preserving land for redevelopment and
improving safety for pedestrians.

I’ve said many times that the public process makes our plans stronger and that
working together we can develop solutions that address the needs of our
neighborhoods, while moving our city forward. The public process works, and this is
a great example of that. I want to thank all of our residents and partners who have
invested time and energy into developing this design with us. We look forward to
working closely with RIDOT to get this great project under construction.
