SINGLE CAR MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT ON ROUTE 95 SOUTH IN HOPKINTON LEAVES CONNECTICUT WOMAN IN CRITICAL CONDITION

RI – Colonel Steven G. O’Donnell, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Commissioner of Public Safety, announces that at approximately 1:00 a.m. on March 18, 2014, the Hope Valley Barracks received several 911 calls reporting a roll over motor vehicle on Route 95 south,  north of the Woodville Alton Road overpass in Hopkinton.

Initial investigation revealed that the operator and lone occupant of the vehicle was driving a 2000 Lincoln Navigator at a high rate of speed and passing other vehicles before losing control of the vehicle.  After the vehicle struck the center barrier, it rolled onto its passenger side.  During the collision with the barrier, the driver was ejected and pinned beneath the vehicle.  No other vehicles were involved in the accident.  The Hope Valley Fire Department contacted Life Star, a critical care helicopter service, to transport the operator to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment, where she is in listed critical condition.

Both southbound lanes of traffic were diverted onto Route 3 south via Exit 3B and back onto Route 95 south at Exit 1.  This closure took place from 1:10 a.m. through 3:45 a.m., with the right travel lane opening at 2:55 a.m. .  The two northbound travel lanes were shutdown from 1:31 a.m. until 1:56 a.m. to allow Life Star to land their helicopter.

The driver of the Lincoln Navigator was identified as Amy Sherman, age 24, of Pawcatuck, Connecticut.

No criminal charges or motor vehicle violations have been filed, as the accident is still under investigation by members of the Hope Valley Barracks and Collision Reconstruction Unit.
