Secretary of State Nellie M. Gorbea will host Archivist of the United States, David
S. Ferriero, for a gallery talk titled, “Documenting Democracy: The Role of Archives
in Preserving our Past” at the Rhode Island State Archives. Rhode Island’s original
copy of the Bill of Rights will be on display during the event.

“It’s an honor to have Mr. Ferriero provide a national perspective on the important
role archives play in preserving our past and shaping our future. His visit will
highlight Rhode Island’s own rich and diverse history documented in our State
Archives,” said Secretary Gorbea.

In November 2009, David S. Ferriero was confirmed as the 10th Archivist of the
United States. Early in his administration, he initiated an agency transformation
and committed the National Archives and Records Administration to the principles of
Open Government – transparency, participation, and collaboration. Previously, Mr.
Ferriero served as the Andrew W. Mellon Director of the New York Public Libraries
(NYPL) and prior to the NYPL at two of the nation’s major academic libraries, the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, and Duke University in
Durham, NC.
