Rhode Island State Police Will Increase Patrols and Enforcement Over Labor Day Weekend

Colonel Ann C. Assumpico, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and
Director of the Rhode Island Department of Public Safety, urges motorists to use
extra care over the holiday weekend. Additional troopers will be assigned to provide
increased enforcement – especially when it comes to driving while impaired by
alcohol or drugs, distracted driving and aggressive driving.

A recent study of federal highway statistics showed that Labor Day has the third
highest number of fatal crashes of all major holidays, with Memorial Day and Fourth
of July ranking first and second. That’s why the Rhode Island State Police will be
aggressively enforcing motor vehicle laws to help keep Rhode Island’s roadways safe.

Colonel Assumpico offers the following safety tips and reminders for motorists
travelling this holiday weekend:

* Don’t drink and drive. If you’re celebrating the holiday weekend, arrange for
a safe ride home.

* Buckle up. Make sure drivers and passengers are wearing seatbelts and that
children are properly secured in child safety seats.

* Avoid distractions. Set your GPS before you start your car. Avoid cell phone
use. Never text and drive.

* Allow extra time. With more motorists on the road, it likely will take longer
to get to your destination. Avoid driving during peak travel periods if possible.

* Stay alert. Drowsy driving can be as dangerous as drunk driving. Make sure
you’re well-rested before heading out.

Colonel Assumpico also encourages motorists to call 911 if they spot anyone driving
in an unsafe manner.
