Rhode Island State Police and North Smithfield Police Investigate a Wrong Way Crash on Route 146
On Saturday, April 29, 2017 at approximately 3:00 AM, the Rhode Island State Police and North Smithfield Police Department investigated a wrong way crash on Route 146 North in the town of North Smithfield. As a result of this investigation, the Rhode Island State Police has charged a Worcester, Massachusetts male with driving under the influence of liquor and/ or drugs, resulting in serious bodily injury (three counts) and reckless driving. The investigation revealed Aleksandro Mihali, age 22 of 4 Zenith Drive in the City of Worcester, Massachusetts was traveling south in the northbound lanes of Route 146 as he entered Rhode Island from Massachusetts. The State Police allege Aleksandro Mihali was traveling the wrong direction in the high-speed lane and collided head on with a Honda Accord approximately 800’ south of the state line. The Honda Accord was traveling northbound in the highspeed lane at the time of the collision. The two female occupants of the Honda Accord sustained serious bodily injuries as a result of the crash and were transported to Rhode Island Hospital by rescue personnel. Aleksandro Mihali and a sole female passenger in his vehicle were also transported to Rhode Island Hospital as a result of the injuries they sustained. The identity of the three involved injured parties are being withheld at this time. The investigation remains ongoing and is being investigated by members of the Rhode Island State Police, North Smithfield Police, Rhode Island State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and Rhode Island State Police Forensic Services Unit.
