Lieutenant Colonel Kevin M. Barry will serve Acting
Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police as well as the Acting Director of
the Department of Public Safety while the search is underway for a permanent
replacement.
RI – Lieutenant Colonel Barry is a twenty-two (22) year veteran of the Rhode Island State Police and serves as the Commanding Officer of the Department of Public Safety. He oversees operations and administrative functions the Rhode Island State Police Training Academy and the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy. He also oversees all agencies within the Department of Public Safety including the Rhode Island Division of Sheriffs, the Rhode Island Capitol Police, the E 9-1-1 Uniform Emergency Telephone System, the Division of the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal, the Department of Public Safety Central Management Office, and the Public Safety Grants Administration Office.

Lieutenant Colonel Barry has served at all the barracks as a member of the Uniform Bureau. His previous assignments include Prosecution Officer at the Lincoln Woods Barracks and the Night Executive Officer. While assigned to the Detective Bureau, he served in the Intelligence Unit, High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force and FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force. He was a Patrol/Narcotics Canine Handler, an instructor for 2011 RISP Training Academy, and an officer in the Rhode Island Troopers’ Association for over 10 years. Lieutenant Colonel Barry was the Commandant of the 2013 Rhode Island State Police Training Academy and served as the District «A» Commander. He was the acting Chief of Police/Colonel of the Cranston Police Department from January 2014 to October 2014. Most recently he served as the Executive Officer of the Rhode Island Department of Public Safety.

Prior to joining the Rhode Island State Police, Lieutenant Colonel Barry served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. He is a graduate of the 239th Session of the FBI National Academy and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology from Worcester State University.
