Rhode Island State Police Investigate a Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash on Route 146 North in the Town of North Providence

RI – On August 6, 2016, at 1:35 AM, Troopers from the Rhode Island State Lincoln Woods Barracks and Officers from North Providence Police Department responded to a motor vehicle crash on Route 146 North in the Town of North Providence.

Initial investigation revealed that a BMW was traveling on Route 146 North in the low speed lane in the Town of North Providence. A Nissan that was also traveling in the low speed lane approached the BMW at a high rate of speed. At a point just north of Mineral Spring Avenue, the Nissan was unable to avoid the BMW, and struck it in the rear end. As a result of the initial collision, the Nissan lost control, veered to the left and struck the center concrete barrier. Subsequently, the Nissan entered into a roll over, ejecting the driver. The Nissan came to final rest on its roof facing south in the left shoulder. The BMW continued to travel north in the low speed lane where it then came to a rolling stop in the right breakdown lane.

The operator and three passengers in the BMW were wearing their seatbelts and were transported to Rhode Island Hospital via rescue for non-life threatening injuries. The operator of the Nissan was not wearing a seatbelt and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

All lanes of Route 146 North at Mineral Spring Avenue were closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated.

The motor vehicle crash continues to be under investigation by members of the Rhode Island State Police-Lincoln Woods Barracks, Rhode Island State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) and Forensic Service Unit (FSU).
