Temporary service changes due to REAL ID program launch

CRANSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island motor-vehicle services will be unavailable at AAA Northeast branches on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018 as the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles brings its REAL ID computer program online. The REAL ID Act was enacted by the federal government in 2005 in response to the 9/11 terror attacks to establish security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards.

Beginning Oct. 1, 2020, REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses or IDs will be required for domestic air travel and entry into certain federal facilities. To accommodate Rhode Islanders choosing to obtain a REAL ID credential, the Division of Motor Vehicles expects to begin issuing licenses and IDs compliant with these federal requirements Monday, Dec. 3, 2018.

Motor-vehicle services, including the new REAL ID license transactions, will be restored to AAA Northeast branches on Dec. 3 as well.

The division apologizes for any inconvenience caused to our customers and AAA members.
