Providence, RI – The American Red Cross is helping twelve families – eighteen adults after a fire Sunday afternoon on Elmwood Ave, Providence.

Fire fighters battled a multiple-alarm fire on a three-story structure on 155 Elmwood Avenue.

One person inside the home and two firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation.

According to Deputy Chief Steven Houle with the Providence Fire Department, there were residents still inside the home at the time, and several of them had to be removed from the three-story structure using ladders.  He also said that day’s heat was a major challenge for the crews and that every company on duty was called to the scene

The Red Cross provided assistance to meet the families’ immediate needs. The Red Cross is also providing comfort kits containing personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant; shaving supplies and other items a resident might not have been able to gather in the rush to escape the fire. Those affected will meet with Red Cross caseworkers in the coming days to work on a longer-term recovery plan.
