STATE HOUSE – Sen. Juan Pichardo (D-Dist. 2, Providence) has partnered with the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) and the Providence Unified School District for the third year to present the USHLI Student Leadership Series tour. The tour is part of USHLI’s 2015 Student Leadership Series, designed to «Create a Culture of Education.»

USHLI, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization, was created to promote education, research and leadership development to empower Latinos.

«The tour is a great way to keep parents and students informed of the resources available to them,» said Senator Pichardo. «We really hope to
motivate them to take charge of their future by showing them where to find the opportunities to start them on the road to success.»

The students will have the opportunity to attend an assembly where a motivational speaker will challenge students to achieve their full potential through their own personal life experiences and thought-provoking insights. Parents and students can also attend an evening parental involvement in education workshop.

«With today’s competitive job market, pursuing a higher education is critical for our Hispanic youth,» said Dr. Juan Andrade, president ofUSHLI. «We must continue to motivate our youth and provide them with career and educational resources that will support them on their path to success.»

The speaking programs will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday at Roger Williams Middle School, Juanita Sanchez Education Complex High School, Gilbert Stuart Middle School, Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School, Central High School, Hope High School and Delsesto Middle School. There will be a Youth and Parent Forum on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School.

Speakers will include Alfred Ramirez, director of operations for the U.S. Hispanic Leadership Institute headquartered in Chicago. Ramirez oversees USHLI major programs, projects and events. He is also a speaker and trainer for individuals, businesses, organizations, K-12 schools, universities and communities nationwide that need dynamic assistance in developing and achieving leadership, life, education, and career goals and strategies.

Also participating will be motivational speakers Shayla Rivera & Andres Lara.

«This series of speakers and support to students are critical in assisting in closing the education achievement gap,» said Senator Pichardo.

USHLI is a Chicago-based national non-profit, non-partisan organization whose mission is to fulfill the promises and principles of democracy by promoting education, research, leadership development, and empowering Latinos and similarly disenfranchised groups by maximizing their civic awareness, engagement, and participation
