Mayor James A. Diossa Celebrates the One Year Anniversary of the 10- Minute Walk Campaign by Participating in National “Walk to a Park Day”
CENTRAL FALLS, RI– Mayor James A. Diossa joined The Trust for Public Land, National Recreation and Park Association, and Urban Land Institute on Oct. 10 to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the 10 Minute Walk Campaign and highlight the importance of parks and public green
spaces to quality of life in Central Falls. To celebrate, Mayor Diossa joined the first national “Walk to a Park Day” by walking to Jenks Park.
Mayor Diossa partnered with more than 200 mayors across the country to support the ambitious goal that everyone in the country, and all residents of Central Falls, should live within a 10-minute walk (or half-mile) of a high-quality park or green space.
“We are committed to making sure every resident has access to high quality outdoor recreation in Central Falls, so we are steadfast in our support of the 10-Minute Walk Campaign,” said Mayor Diossa. “We’re showing our commitment by participating in National ‘Walk to A Park Day” and
spreading awareness of our mission to ensure there is a quality park or open space within 10-minute walking distance for everyone in this country.”
Mayor Diossa encourages everyone in Central Falls to walk to their nearest park to promote the benefits of parks and open space.
Studies show that high quality-parks provide a wide range of benefits to people living in urban areas and cities themselves. These include physical and mental health benefits, by providing opportunities to be physically active and to interact with nature: economic benefits by boosting business and helping to revitalize neighborhoods; community-building benefits by providing opportunities for neighbors to interact with each other and work together to improve their surroundings; and environmental benefits by cleaning and cooling the air, improving climate resilience, and providing
opportunities for environmental education.
