PROVIDENCE, RI – Mayor Jorge O. Elorza will host a Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at Providence City Hall on Thursday, October 11 from 5:30PM to 7:00PM. The event will feature live music, a variety of traditional dishes from Hispanic countries, folkloric dances and a special presentation by the Providence-based musical group Robertico Arias y Su Alebreke, which specializes in Afro-Cuban music, such as rumba, son, mambo, salsa, Latin jazz, bachata and merengue. This celebration is free and open to the public.

Each year, National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period.
