Mayor Elorza, Community Partners Celebrate Expansion of Peace and Plenty Park

PROVIDENCE, RI – Mayor Jorge O. Elorza joined State elected officials,
representatives from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management,
members of the City Council, Parks Superintendent Wendy Nilsson, and Friends of
Peace and Plenty Park in a log cutting ceremony to celebrate the expansion of the
City’s Peace and Plenty Park.

«With the expansion of our Peace and Plenty park we’re strengthening the Elmwood
neighborhood by providing youth a play area that connects them with nature and
promotes physical activity,» said Mayor Elorza. «The success of this project is a
prime example of the power of partnerships to transform the landscape of the capital
city-as it has revitalized abandoned lots for the benefit of one of our
communities.»

The park’s expansion into two adjoining lots that were previously vacant was made
possible through grant funding from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental
Management, Community Development Block Grant funds from the City Council, and a
partnership between the City’s Parks Department and Friends of Peace and Plenty
Park.

The expanded park space was created with natural, recycled and repurposed materials
including stones and logs, and will house programming provided the Broad Street YMCA
of Greater Providence branch, the Urban Wildlife Refuge Partnership, and the city’s
Arts, Culture + Tourism Department throughout the summer.
