James J. Caruolo Sworn-in As District Court Associate Judge

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Governor Gina M. Raimondo today swore-in James J. Caruolo, the
new Associate Judge of the state District Court.
«With his years of legal and military service, Jim brings valuable experience to
the District Court,» Raimondo said. «Given the additional emphasis the District
Court is placing on serving our veterans, I am delighted that he is joining the
bench.»
«I am proud to take on this new role, and grateful to Governor Raimondo for having
trust and confidence in my abilities as an attorney and as member of the judiciary,»
Caruolo said.
James J. Caruolo has been an attorney since 1991. Prior to going into private practice,
Caruolo worked as a prosecutor in the Attorney General’s Office in the Appellate
Division, District Court Unit, and Narcotics & Organized Crime Unit. He is a Colonel
in the Army National Guard, where he served as the State Judge Advocate. He also
served as the Assistant Town Solicitor for the town of North Providence. Caruolo
previously served as a board member of the Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center. He graduated
with a degree in Political Science from Rhode Island College and received his law
degree from Suffolk University Law School. Caruolo lives in North Kingstown.
Caruolo will be filling a newly-created District Court seat. This seat was created
by state lawmakers to allow the court to expand its Veterans Treatment Court’s
calendar,
which was established in 2011 to integrate support and treatment plans in the judicial
process for veterans diagnosed with trauma-related disorders.
The District Court has jurisdiction over civil matters where the amount in controversy
is less than $5,000, landlord/tenant matters, violations of housing standards, and
criminal arraignments of misdemeanors and felonies. The Court also has specialty
mental health and small claims calendars.
