Langevin Statement on House Intelligence Committee Investigation into Russian
Interference in the Election

Washington, D.C- Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI), a senior member of the House
Committees on Armed Services and Homeland Security, issued the following statement
in respect to recent developments in the House Permanent Select Committee on
Intelligence’s investigation into Russia’s interference with the U.S. election and
possible collusion with the Trump campaign:

«As a former member of the House Intelligence Committee, I appreciate the hard work
of the Committee Members and staff on our most sensitive national security issues.
However, I am deeply concerned with Chairman Nunes’s recent conduct regarding both
his visit to the White House grounds to meet with an unnamed source and his lack of
transparency about the visit with the rest of the Committee. The Russian information
operations last year targeted the very heart of our democracy, our elections, and
the investigation into this interference cannot be tinged with any hint of
partisanship nor conducted behind closed doors.

«I have introduced
legislation
that would create a bipartisan, bicameral committee to look into the Russian actions
and any possible ties to the Trump campaign without being bound by jurisdictional
lines, and I continue to believe that this is the best way forward. Chairman Nunes’s
actions in discussing the Committee’s work with the White House and canceling a
planned open hearing only reinforce this belief, and I hope that a joint committee
and an independent commission are both quickly established to reassure the American
public and present them with the plain facts.»
