Hasbro Children’s Hospital Pediatrician Angela Anderson, MD, Receives Milton Hamolsky Outstanding Physician Award

Hasbro Children’s Hospital pediatrician Angela Anderson, MD, has received the 2013 Annual Milton Hamolsky Outstanding Physician Award from the Rhode Island Hospital medical staff. Anderson was honored for her leadership, outstanding clinical skills and her commitment to medical education. The award is the highest honor the medical staff bestows on one of its own.

Anderson has a role in many departments throughout the hospital. She is quadruple board certified in pediatrics, pediatric emergency medicine, clinical pharmacology/toxicology, and hospice and palliative care medicine. For nearly 18 years, Anderson was an attending physician in the Hasbro Children’s Hospital pediatric emergency department where she still consults on toxicology cases and pain management. In 2010, she began her current role as director of pediatric pain and palliative care at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

“Dr. Anderson’s contributions to our pediatric emergency department are immeasurable as a clinician, educator, and advisor to others,” said Susan Duffy, M.D., medical director of the Hasbro Children’s Hospital emergency department. “She has spent many years bringing expertise, comfort and humor into an emergency setting that can be frightening and stressful for families. Along with the entire pediatric emergency medicine department, I am proud to call Angie a cherished colleague and friend.”

Anderson, of Hope, R.I., is also an associate professor of pediatrics and emergency medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She earned her medical degree at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and completed her residency in pediatrics at Yale Medical School. Anderson also completed fellowships in both pediatric emergency medicine, and clinical toxicology and pharmacology at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital.

Her contributions to medicine are far-reaching having led hundreds of presentations nationally and internationally on a wide range of subjects ranging from toxicology to palliative care. Anderson has also provided volunteer medical care to refugees in Somalia and Ethiopia, and to underprivileged patients in Jamaica. She was deployed to New Orleans with Rhode Island Disaster Medical Assistance Team 1 for relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Locally, she volunteers her time on the boards of directors at the Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center in Providence and at Tannerhill, Inc.

Anderson has received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the National Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association, the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award from The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and the Outstanding Mentor Award from the National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health. She currently serves on the Rhode Island Hospital Ethics Committee.

The Hamolsky Outstanding Physician Award is presented each year to a physician who has made exceptional contributions to medicine, medical education and research; who has demonstrated leadership; and who has been an exemplary role model. The award honors Milton Hamolsky, M.D., an endocrinologist who came to Rhode Island Hospital in 1963 and served as the first full-time physician-in-chief. Hamolsky was also the chief administrative officer of the Rhode Island Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline, and a pioneer of medical education in Rhode Island.
