Cicilline Statement on Russia Sanctions Law

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI) issued the following
statement after President Trump signed legislation that increases sanctions on
Russia and limits his ability to roll back sanctions on Russia:

«Russia’s interference in last year’s presidential election demanded a strong
response in the form of new sanctions, and the Trump campaign’s well-documented ties
to Vladimir Putin’s regime obligated us to tie the President’s hands on this matter.
The bill that was signed into law today does both.»

«Like many, I am concerned about whether the Trump administration will faithfully
execute this new law. Republicans in Congress have so far given Donald Trump a blank
check to do whatever he wants. Democrats will continue to demand strong oversight of
this administration until Republicans start doing their jobs.»

«Russia’s actions last year amounted to an assault on our most sacred democratic
institutions. It’s critical that the President holds them accountable. Not doing so
would generate yet another scandal that distracts from the challenges facing
American families.»
