WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement today:

«I congratulate Judge Merrick Garland on his nomination to the Supreme Court of the United States.»

«Since our country’s founding, the Supreme Court has had the final say on protecting the rights of the people and ensuring justice for all Americans. As the Constitution makes clear, it is the President’s job to nominate new justices to the Supreme Court, and the Senate’s job to advise and consent on those nominations.»

«It is essential that Republicans who control the Senate do their jobs. Six justices have been confirmed in presidential election years since 1912. The Senate should move swiftly to hold hearings and offer Judge Garland an up or down vote without delay.»
