The Chinese press reported that seismologists in Beijing detected an incident on the ocean floor about 200 kilometers northeast of the last point of contact with the missing Malaysian Airlines aircraft.
The scientists pointed out that it is an area in the South China Sea where there has been previous seismic activity.
The movement registered on the ocean floor could have been caused, according to Xinhua public agency, by the fall of the plane in the water.
However, United States officials said that new data would lead the search for the aircraft in the Indian Ocean.
