Providence police report

On 01/10/2018 at approximately 0948 hrs, School Resource Officer Pea along with Patrol units responded to Juanita Sanchez High School located at 182 Thurbers Ave for a report of a person with a gun. SRO Pea was notified via cellphone by the school’s Assistant Principal Testa at which time she was advised to put the school on lockdown. Police responded to the Principal’s office and spoke to a student identified as Edgar Matos DOB 1 /00, student later identified as DOB 6/ /03 opened the side door (near custodian office on Richardson street) and waited to let two unknown subjects in the building. Matos stated that he was getting a drink at the bubbler when the two subjects ran passed him and went into the foyer area. The two subjects came back within minutes to Matos’s area near the bubbler, at which time the subject with the red vest hit Matos with a black handgun in the head while demanding him to “run his pockets”. Matos stated that he refused to give up his cellphone in his pocket and fought back at which time the two subjects ran out the building. One subject with the handgun was described as a black male approximately 5’8’’ in height, 16-18 year old and wearing a black hoodie under a red vest, black pants and white sneakers. The second subject was described as a black male approximately 5’8’’ in height, 16-18 year old and wearing a black hooded jacket, tan pants, and white sneakers. The lockdown was lifted once the two subjects were confirmed through surveillance video to be out of the building. Matos sustained a minor cut to the left side of his forehead. He refused rescue but was seen by the school nurse. Detectives and Car 550 Sgt Wheeler responded to the scene. was transported to central station YSB bureau for investigation. The victim Matos responded to central station and left a recorded statement with YSB detectives.
