At least six children were killed when a school bus carrying dozens of students in the southern U.S. city of Chattanooga, Tennessee, crashed Monday.
Police say at least 35 students from kindergarten through grade 5 were on the bus when it crashed, turned on its side and wrapped around a tree.
Twenty-three children were brought to hospitals, officials said. Hamilton County District Attorney Neal Pinkston told media outlets that five children died at the scene and one died at a hospital.
«Our hearts go out, as well as the hearts of all these people behind me, to the families, the neighborhood, the school, for all the people involved in this, we assure you we are doing everything we can,» Chattanooga Police Chief Fred Fletcher said at a news conference.
Fletcher said the bus was the only vehicle involved in the crash and that police were interviewing the driver.
