One police officer was killed and another seriously injured in a shooting early Friday, in the U.S. city of San Diego, the city’s police chief said.

The shooting reportedly took place in a neighborhood just after the officers made a traffic stop.  Nearby officers came to the scene to find both officers shot, one of them with multiple gun shots to the chest.

Local media accounts indicate fellow officers put him in a squad car and drove him to a hospital while performing lifesaving procedures.

«I’m heartbroken to report they were unable to save his life,» Chief Shelley Zimmerman told local media.

It is with a very sad heart that we announce the death of one of our Officers tonight. Pray for his familypic.twitter.com/3l9PXa1vuW

Police across the U.S. have been on alert following the killing of several officers in the cities of Dallas and Baton Rouge in recent weeks.

In the San Diego case, Zimmerman said that a suspect, a Hispanic male, was in custody. He is being treated for a gunshot wound at a local hospital.

The injured officer underwent surgery and is expected to survive, the San Diego Police Department said on Twitter.

An investigation into what started the shooting is ongoing.
