ROVIDENCE, RI – Secretary of State Nellie M. Gorbea today announced the official

launch of her new Online Voter Registration (OVR) portal at vote.ri.gov and in

Spanish at vota.ri.gov. With the August 14 voter registration deadline for the

September State Primary just two weeks away, eligible Rhode Island voters can now

securely register to vote or update their registration information online with just

a few clicks.

“When I ran for office, I pledged to Rhode Islanders that I would utilize the latest

technology to modernize elections in our state. I am pleased to make good on that

promise today by launching online voter registration for eligible voters across the

state,” Secretary Gorbea said. “This technology makes it easier for voters to

register to vote and update their voter information while improving the accuracy and

integrity of Rhode Island’s voter rolls.”

Legislation enabling the adoption of OVR in Rhode Island was sponsored this past

legislative session by Senator Gayle L. Goldin and Representative Aaron Regunberg.

Rhode Island joins 31 states, plus the District of Columbia, in offering OVR.

Arizona was the first state to implement such a system in 2002.

The Rhode Island OVR portal, created entirely through in-house efforts, was fully

tested for web accessibility in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act

and meets all guidelines to achieve a Level AA compliance rating.

Sunday, August 14 is the voter registration deadline for the September 13 State

Primary. Voters who have moved or changed their names since they last voted should

check and update their information at vote.ri.gov in order to avoid difficulties at

the polls.

Anyone with questions regarding their voting status or the elections this fall can

contact the Department of State’s Election Division at 401-222-2340 or by email at
