Rising unemployment

Rhode Island – The unemployment rate in Rhode Island rose slightly in December to 9.1 percent, compared with 9.0 percent in November. It is lower than the rate of 9.9 percent from a year ago, according to data released Thursday by the Department of Labor and Training Rhode Island. The state lost 1,500 jobs in December, down from the 470,700 jobs the state had in November. The number of jobs in Rhode Island is higher than it was a year ago, when the DLT reported 465,600 jobs. However, the total employment in the state are still well below the 496,400 jobs recorded in December 2006, which was the peak employment level of Rhode Island. The state has lost about 40,000 jobs in the Great Recession and has yet to recover those jobs.
