RI State Police Increases Patrols for Super Bowl Sunday; Reminds Everyone to Arrange a Safe, Sober Ride Home

The Rhode Island State Police will have additional troopers on patrol throughout the state on Super Bowl Sunday to help keep everyone safe.

«With the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl again this year, we know many Rhode Islanders will be gathering with family and friends to watch the game,» said Lieutenant Colonel Kevin M. Barry, Acting Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Acting Director of the Department of Public Safety. «We encourage them to celebrate responsibly and to arrange for safe, sober rides home.»

Super Bowl Sunday has become one of the biggest party days of the year, with more arrests and crashes linked to drunk driving than on any other Sunday, according to news reports. Some studies show the numbers are highest in areas that have a team playing in the game, with the largest number reported in regions with the winning team.

That’s why the Rhode Island State Police has assigned additional patrols to strictly enforce all motor vehicle laws, especially those involving impaired driving. They will arrest and prosecute anyone found to be operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Motorists also are encouraged to call 911 if they see anyone who may be operating a motor vehicle while impaired or in an otherwise unsafe manner.

«We all need to work together to keep our roadways safe – not only on Super Bowl Sunday, but throughout the year,» Lt. Colonel Barry said.

The Rhode Island State Police offers the following safety reminders:
* If you plan to drink, don’t drive. Arrange for a safe and sober ride home.

* Don’t let friends drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

* Stay alert – especially if travelling after the game and parties end.

* Buckle up. That’s the best protection for everyone in the event of a crash.
