The Rhode Island Fire Marshal’s Office will be closed for routine business, including permits, inspections and licenses, on Thursday (Feb. 2) and Friday (Feb. 3) as some of its offices are relocated to Warwick, according to State Fire Marshal John Chartier.
Emergency calls for fire investigations and the bomb squad will not be affected, he said. Anyone using the statewide E-Permitting System also will not be impacted by this move.
The Fire Marshal’s Office will reopen at its new location, 560 Jefferson Blvd., Warwick, on Monday (Feb. 6), Marshal Chartier said. Regular business hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The new phone number for general business will be 401-889-5555. This number will be operational as of Thursday and will be answered during regular business hours before, during and after the move, Marshal Chartier said. The emergency number, 401-441-1711, will remain unchanged.
Marshal Chartier said the two-day closing should have little impact on the general public. Emergency calls will continue be answered during the move. People are also invited to use the E-Permitting System. However, anyone who plans to come to the office with requests for permits, fire alarm inspections and other routine business will have to wait until the new office opens on Monday, he said.
The Fire Marshal’s Office, which is responsible for all fire code inspections, fire investigations and bomb squad activity, currently operates from three locations, Marshal Chartier explained. The Administrative Office and Fire Investigation Unit were located at 1951 Smith St., North Providence, while the Fire Inspections Unit and Plan Review Unit were located at 1 Capitol Hill, Providence. Both of those offices are relocating to Warwick on Monday. The Technical Services Unit and Rhode Island Fire Academy, both in Exeter, are not affected.
“This move allows us to consolidate most of our operations under one roof, which will help us to provide our services more efficiently and effectively,” Marshal Chartier said. “We apologize for the temporary inconvenience during the move, but we believe the end result will allow us to better serve the public.”
