Cranston – Firefighters found the body of 32-year-old Aliss Collins Friday night inside a third-floor apartment on Marcy Street. Collins and her unborn child were pronounced dead at a hospital. The Rhode Island Department of Health revealed Wednesday that Collins died from multiple blunt force trauma head injuries, along with smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Collins lived in the third floor of a triple-decker. The other two apartments were not damaged, and no other people were injured in the fire.

Shortly after the fire started, eyewitnesses told officers they saw a black man wearing an orange or red sweatshirt and black shorts running away from the building.

Born Smith, who police said has no prior criminal convictions, is scheduled to be arraigned at 1 p.m. at Kent County District Court in Warwick.
