North Kingstwon Post Office dedicated to Melvoid Benson
R I – The North Kingstwon post office has been name in honor of Melvoid Benson a teacher, community leader and former State Representative. Benson was the first black woman to be elected to the Rhode Island legislature. The Melvoid J. Benson is the first post office in Rhode Island name in Honor of an African-American.
Since 1967 postal facilities have been name after important local and national figures, Congressmen, and postal employees who die in the line of duty.
The bill was sponsored by congressmen Jim Langevin.
More than a hundred people attended Sunday’s dedication.
