Ex-Guerrilla Wins Salvadorian Presidential Elections

The Salvadoran Supreme Electoral Court confirmed that Salvador Sanchez Ceren, candidate for the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN), won the presidential elections last Sunday in the Central American country.

The former guerrilla achieved 50.11% of the vote (1,495,815), while rival Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA), Norman Quijano, won 49.89% (1,489,451).

The difference was only 0.22 points.

With 10,445 votes counted, the difference between the two candidates was less than 7,000 votes .

The Salvadoran court officially declared president-elect Sanchez Ceren, the current vice president of the country, because it must first resolve appeals against the election process, including one puit forth by ARENA Tuesday alleging electoral fraud.

The new president will take possession June 1 for the period 2014-2019 .

The FMLN plans to celebrate the victory on Saturday in a square in the Salvadoran capital, announced the Minister of Communications and member of the party, Roberto Lorenzana, through his Twitter account.
