City of Providence Celebrates St. Joseph’s Day
Mayor Elorza Leads Celebration of Italian-American Heritage, Culture
PROVIDENCE, RI – A traditional Italian holiday arrived a day early as Mayor Jorge O.
Elorza hosted the City’s annual St. Joseph’s Day celebration in Providence City Hall
today.
“Italian-Americans have had a significant role in shaping Providence,” said Mayor
Elorza. “We are proud to celebrate the rich heritage and countless contributions
members of the Italo-American community have brought to the City of Providence.”
Mayor Elorza hosted the celebration, which included a musical performance by Dominic
Di Pasquale. Father Vincent Lonardo delivered the invocation, and Business Manager
and Secretary-Treasurer of the Rhode Island Laborers’ District Council, Michael
Sabitoni, delivered the keynote address.
Members of the Providence State Delegation and City Council served as honorary
co-chairs for the celebration. Senators Ruggerio and Ciccone joined Representatives
DeSimone, Carnevale, Lima, Lombardi and Palangio as well as City Councilors Correia,
Igliozzi, Narducci, Principe and Salvatore as honorary co-chairs.
The celebration concluded with a special reception in Council Chambers which offered
zeppoles and other refreshments to those in attendance.
