Cicilline: Conyers Should Resign

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01), a member of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement:

“Like many Americans, I’ve spent the past few weeks listening to and reflecting upon the stories of brave women who have had the courage to come forward and share their experiences with sexual harassment and assault. This is a national conversation that is long overdue. It’s no doubt a pivotal moment in the history of our country. And it’s critical that we ensure all women feel safe and welcome in the workplace.”

“I’ve also had to confront, as a Member of Congress, some uncomfortable truths about an individual with whom I’ve served and admired for years. It is hard to understand and fully comprehend how someone who has done so much to promote equality and protect the rights of people in his professional capacity could be capable of such horrible personal actions. Sadly, this is a reality known to women across the country.”

“This morning, I watched Marion Brown share her story on national television. I’ve reviewed the accounts of multiple other women who say they were mistreated. I believe the women who have accused Congressman John Conyers. I am in awe of the courage they’ve shown by coming forward and publicly sharing these horrifying stories.”

“This is a moment when political loyalties and concerns about relationships with colleagues must yield to standing up for what is right. It should not have taken any of us, myself included, this long to come to the conclusion that Congressman Conyers should resign.”
