Cianci Diagnosed with Cancer

Former Providence Mayor Vincent “Buddy” Cianci said Monday he has been diagnosed with cancer, but he expects a full recovery.

Cianci was elected mayor in 1974 and held the job until 1984, when he resigned after pleading no contest to assaulting a man in his East Side home. He was elected to mayor’s office again in 1990 and remained there until he was again forced to resign, in 2002, after being convicted on a racketeering conspiracy. He served five years in federal prison.
