PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Governor Gina M. Raimondo today swore in Brian A. Goldman, the new Judge of the state District Court.

«I am happy to be appointing a Judge who is not only a skilled and experienced lawyer, but is also a veteran who has served his country,» Raimondo said. «Judge Goldman will serve all Rhode Islanders diligently and with justice.»

«Thank you, Governor Raimondo, for selecting me to serve in this position,» Goldman said. «I am truly honored and humbled, and I look forward to my time on the bench.»

Goldman, of Providence, has been a practicing attorney since 1988. He has litigated cases before state and federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. He previously served as counsel to the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council. Goldman is also a combat veteran who enlisted in the Air Force in 1983 and served in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm as a C-130 Pilot. He was an Air Force Staff Judge Advocate and retired in 2012 as a lieutenant colonel. Goldman received his bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Middlebury College and earned his law degree from the Boston University School of Law.

Judge Goldman will replace former Judge Frank J. Cenerini, who retired after more than two decades on the bench.

The District Court has jurisdiction over civil matters where the amount in controversy is less than $5,000, landlord/tenant matters, violations of housing standards, and criminal arraignments of misdemeanors and felonies. The Court has specialty mental health, small claims, and veterans’ calendars.
