Mayor Elorza Opens Summer Recreation Programs Throughout City
PROVIDENCE, RI – Mayor Elorza today announced the beginning of expanded Summer Recreation programs that including dozens of camp activities, the opening of municipal pools and water parks, the city’s summer meals program, basketball leagues –including the highly anticipated return of Midnight Basketball– and other summer recreation activities throughout the City of Providence. “I am committed to making sure Providence is the healthiest city in New England, and that means we are stepping up our game when it comes to summer recreation and healthy opportunities for residents,” said Mayor Elorza. “Whether it’s sports, exploring nature, biking, eating well or cooling off in our pools and water parks, the city’s Summer Recreation programs are expanding to help make this summer the healthiest, safest and most fun it can be.” The City of Providence offers numerous opportunities for children and adults alike. For city youth, weekly sports, camps< offer soccer, basketball, tennis, golf, track, volleyball, baseball and more. The city is also offering a nature camp, creative arts camp and bicycle camp as well as regular recreation center day camp offerings. In addition to continuing all previous Summer Recreation programs, the 2015 line-up introduces all new programs including Referee Camp, Museum Camp, Cheerleading Camp, new age 5-7 divisions for soccer, basketball cheerleading and tennis camps and the addition of flag football, baseball, soccer and basketball camps for youth age 13-14. Residents of all ages can enjoy the city’s Fitness in the Park program as well as programs from the Urban Wildlife Refuge Partnership. For cooling down,the city offers five public swimming pools and eleven water parks.Pools and waterparks are open from 12PM-5PM Monday thru Saturday for the months of July and August. Swimming lessons are offered three times per week. The Mayor also joined U.S. Senator Jack Reed, Regional Administrator Kurt Messner, USDA Food and Nutrition Service, and Patrick Pass, New England Patriots Alumnus to announce 30+ summer meal sites throughout Providence.
