New England Institute of Technology Interior Design Student Places First at International Interior Design Association Competition
East Greenwich, RI – Dr. Douglas H. Sherman, Senior Vice President and Provost at New England Institute of Technology (NEIT), announced that Mya Mosher, a recent Bachelor of Science degree graduate of the university’s Interior Design program, won first place at the virtual ceremony of the 13th Annual International Interior Design Association (IIDA) New England Chapter. IIDA is the commercial interior design association that supports educators, students, design professionals, industry affiliates, firms, and their clients through its 15,000+ members across 58 countries. The association promotes interior design as a profession that enhances business value and positively impacts the health and well-being of people’s lives.
The recently held virtual ceremony featured winning designs from 14 categories. The student competition consisted of 11 entries from various colleges and universities throughout New England. The criteria included submission of a project within the last year that included floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, finishes and materials, furniture selection, and renderings. Mosher’s project titled, “The Sterling Hotel” was inspired by Providence’s rich history of jewelry manufacturing and silversmithing. The hotel concept is seven stories high and features a grand lobby, event space, restaurant and more than 300 guest rooms. Each space in the hotel was inspired by a different product from Gorham Silver Manufacturing Company, a staple of Providence’s history.
“What makes me so passionate about interior design is the ability to tell a story and evoke feelings through the overall atmosphere of the space,” stated Mosher. “I have experienced a handful of spaces that gave me such a memorable and magical feeling when I walked into them and I strive to recreate those feelings in my designs.”
For winning first place, Mosher was awarded a cash prize, free membership to IIDA for one year, and a trip to Chicago to attend NeoCon in June 14-16, 2021. NeoCon is the world’s leading platform and most important event for the commercial interior design industry. She will compete in a group design competition with other students from around the country.
Dr. Sherman stated, “The NEIT community is very proud of Mya for her creativity and commitment to the field of interior design. The university’s Associate in Science and Bachelor of Science Interior Design programs prepare students with the knowledge and skills required in this highly competitive field. We congratulate Mya for her well-deserved recognition.”
