PROVIDENCE JOURNAL ENDORSES GINA RAIMONDO FOR REELECTION

“Gov. Raimondo is by far the best candidate for governor of Rhode Island”

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Providence Journal “enthusiastically” endorsed Governor Gina Raimondo today for reelection, citing her focused and successful efforts to strengthen Rhode Island’s economy and fix the state’s roads and bridges.

“Gov. Gina Raimondo is by far the best candidate for governor of Rhode Island this fall,” the Journal editorial board wrote. “Most notably, Ms. Raimondo has reorganized the state Department of Transportation, and put Rhode Island on a path to fixing its most dangerous and dilapidated bridges over the next 10 years. … She has introduced computer science to every school, making Rhode Island the first state to do so. She has helped secure all-day kindergarten across the state and pushed to expand pre-K education. The governor has assessed Rhode Island’s economy and worked hard to secure its future growth, seeking to make it a hub for high-paid jobs through an educated workforce.”

The Journal recognized the Governor’s work to revamp job training: “She has married job training programs to the actual needs of employers, thus funneling thousands of people into high-paying jobs. This has particularly helped Electric Boat meet its need for an educated workforce at a critical time of expansion.”

The endorsement also touted Raimondo’s fiscal management and efforts to cut taxes and make Rhode Island a more business-friendly state: “The governor has championed balanced budgets, without raising broad-based taxes. Her heroic leadership as general treasurer in reforming the state’s pension system is still benefiting the state.”

On Cranston Mayor Allan Fung, the Journal editorial board wrote: “[H]e lacks a compelling vision for moving the state forward, and his wretched handling of the Police Department before the state police stepped in raises serious questions about his administrative ability.”
