Environmental groups endorse Regunberg for lieutenant governor
Early Momentum for Campaign as Leaders Back Regunberg’s Green Leadership & Record
Providence – State Rep. Aaron Regunberg, a Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor, today won the support of three leading statewide environmental groups: the Sierra Club, Clean Water Action, and 350 RI. The endorsements by these organizations, which together represent tens of thousands of Rhode Islanders, is early momentum for Regunberg’s campaign.
James Restivo, the Political Director of the Rhode Island Chapter of Sierra Club, said, “Big polluters and fossil fuel companies pay expensive lobbyists to try to get their way in the State House. Sierra Club enthusiastically endorses Aaron Regunberg for Lieutenant Governor because our communities need a strong voice standing up for a clean energy future. Aaron has passed legislation putting Rhode Islanders to work expanding wind and solar energy, and we know he will continue to lead these critical fights.”
John Berard, the Rhode Island director of Clean Water Action, said, “Clean Water Action very rarely makes endorsements this early. This speaks to how excited we are about Aaron’s candidacy, and how confident we are that Aaron will be effective and principled in using the Lieutenant Governor’s office to fight for clean water and clean air for all Rhode Island families.”
Alexandra Duryea from 350 RI – the Rhode Island affiliate of the national climate action group 350.org – said, “Our future is on the line. And with climate-deniers running Washington, it’s never been more important to have champions like Aaron fighting for bold action at the state level.”
Aaron Regunberg proudly accepted the endorsements. “With the support of Sierra Club, Clean Water Action, and 350.org, our campaign will fight for a future that is fair for all of us,” he said. “Fighting climate change is a moral necessity. It’s also an incredible economic opportunity for our state, and as Lieutenant Governor I will bring people together to pass a Green New Deal that can put thousands of Rhode Islanders to work transitioning our economy to 100% clean energy.”
Aaron Regunberg is running for Lieutenant Governor to be an independent advocate for Rhode Islanders who can’t afford a State House lobbyist. Regunberg has served as a state representative since 2014, and in addition to leading on green energy issues, he has been the lead sponsor of successful legislation to raise Rhode Islanders’ wages, and guarantee earned sick time to over 100,000 working families in Rhode Island.
