Colonel Michael Winquist, Chief of the Cranston Police Department, announces that members of the Department’s Traffic Unit and Bureau of Criminal Identification Unit are continuing to investigate a motor vehicle crash that occurred last night where a pedestrian was struck by a motor vehicle on Park Avenue.
Last night, at approximately 8:10pm, Patrol Officers were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident where a pedestrian had been reportedly struck by a vehicle traveling on Park Avenue near the intersection of Greenwood Street. The preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrian attempted to cross Park Avenue to enter a vehicle that had pulled over on the opposite of the road to provide the pedestrian a ride home. Based on statements obtained from witnesses to the crash, it appears that the pedestrian failed to check for oncoming traffic prior to crossing the roadway and was subsequently struck by a vehicle traveling east on Park Avenue. The pedestrian was wearing dark clothing at the time and failed to cross at a designated crosswalk. The collision caused the pedestrian to strike his head on the windshield and A-pillar of the vehicle. The pedestrian who was injured is identified as a male, age 66, and a resident of the City of Cranston. He sustained life threatening injuries and is currently be treated at Rhode Island Hospital where he remains in critical condition. The operator of the vehicle is identified as a female, age 19, and is also a Cranston resident. She was not injured. Neither speed nor alcohol was a factor in the crash. No criminal or civil charges will be brought against the operator.
