Providence – Family Service of Rhode Island celebrated «International Walk to School Day» on
Wednesday, October 5, 2016, with the non-profit’s «Walking School Bus» program.

Children and volunteers on a «Walking School Bus» route serving Mary E. Fogarty
Elementary School in Providence had balloons and wore «Walking School Bus» t-shirts
in honor of the day and to raise awareness of the need for volunteers. Anyone
interested in volunteering should call Joyce Leven at (401) 499-7850 or email
levenjo@familyserviceri.org.

Kimberly Fernandez, who directs the program, said «Volunteering is a great way to
help kids succeed in school. It’s fun and gets you moving!»

The Walking School Bus promotes school attendance, daily exercise, and positive
relationships between volunteers and walkers. Each morning volunteers in Providence
walk children to school, ensuring they arrive safely and on time.

Family Service of Rhode Island’s Walking School Bus currently operates at Mary E.
Fogarty Elementary, as well as the Sgt. Cornel Young, Jr. & Charlotte Woods and
Harry Kizirian elementary schools, which also had International Walk to School Day
celebrations.

«We’re proud to announce that the Alan Shawn Feinstein Elementary School at Broad
Street launched its first Walking School Bus today,» said Ms. Fernandez.
