Reed Statement on Passing of Edna Mattson
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Jack Reed today issued the following statement on the passing of Edna O’Neill Mattson, former Rhode Island Democratic National Committeewoman and an active volunteer in the community. For decades, she served her fellow citizens locally in North Kingstown, then with the state Democratic party and Democratic National Committee. She was active with the Navy Relief Society, the American Red Cross, the Rhode Island Boy Scouts and worked as a facilities manager for the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI).
Senator Reed stated:
“Edna was the “Grand Dame” of the Rhode Island Democratic Party. She lived to serve others and was the gregarious life of the party — an enthusiastic supporter of countless candidates and a pioneer for women in politics. She was deeply committed to advancing democratic principles and empowering people to serve.
“In addition to being a passionate political force, she was a true patriot and an extraordinary supporter of our servicemen and women.
“I will miss her kindness, friendship, and counsel. I am grateful to have known her and to count her as a friend. My sincere condolences to all her friends and family.”
